Road Supervisory Authority
The Norwegian Road Supervisory Authority (Vegtilsynet) is an independent administrative body under the Ministry of Transport, established to contribute to improved safety on the national road network.
The Authority’s core mandate is to monitor and supervise the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) and the state-owned construction company Nye Veier AS. This includes assessing whether these entities comply with applicable safety requirements and maintain adequate and effective management systems to ensure a high level of safety on national roads.
The Authority operates as a risk-based supervisory body. Its activities are prioritised and directed towards areas where the risk of serious incidents is assessed to be highest, with the aim of preventing accidents and reducing harm to life, health, and economic assets related to road transport.
Through its work, the Authority supports national transport policy objectives, including the vision of zero fatalities and serious injuries in road traffic (Vision Zero).
In addition to its supervisory role, the Authority contributes to continuous improvement in the road sector by promoting learning, sharing knowledge, and providing input to the development of regulatory frameworks and safety practices.
The Norwegian Road Supervisory Authority is located in Voss.
